How does a reachstacker function?

You want to know how does a reachstacker function ? Here some information on containerstacker or also the usual English term reachstacker. Due to its weight of approx. 37-85 tons cannot be used on public roads. Generally  reachstackers are used for the handling of empty or full 20'-40'-containers with a weight of 5 - 45 tons. The main places where reachstackers are used are port terminals, container depots and are also used in the intermodal sector.


This type of machine works like a crane with the accessory spreader which has the dimensions to lift 20' containers but can also be extended to 40' to lift 40' containers either empty or full. In addition there are intermodal reachstacker / intermodal container cranes with an accessory called piggy back which are four arms mounted on the spreader with the captive can also raise a trailer / trailer along with the container and put it on a train.


The reach staker ( richstaker or container lifter ) for laden containers for example can stack full containers in the first row with a weight of approx. 42-45 tons 5 containers high, in the second row they can stack even 25-30 tons and in the 3rd row they can still lift 20 tons.


The best known manufacturers are the Swedish manufacturers Kalmar Industries, SMV Konecranes and Hyster .Smaller manufacturers are the Italian brand Fantuzzi, CVS Ferrari, the German brand Linde and Liebherr, who produce a unique reachstacker with a banana shaped mast, therefore also called a banana stacker, and the brand PPM Terex. For many small terminals that do not have the economic means to buy a portal crane or a transtainer, reachstacker/container cranes are a good alternative.
